Malewicki’s satirical card game of global domination has players take the role of the head of a “major world power” and attempt to win through strategic use of propaganda or use of nuclear weapons. The goal is to be the last player still alive. If everyone dies, no one wins.
The new edition will introduce a third deck to the game which will represent the populations (55 cards). All cards in the game will be upgrades to full color. (Previous editions were produced in 2-color printing.) There will be new cards and a cardstock playmat added to the game. The new edition’s price is tentatively set at $40.00. Backer fulfillment is planned for December, with trade release to follow. The 40-day Kickstarter, which began yesterday, is seeking $50,000, with plans to reprint the OOP Weapons of Mass Destruction expansion if the Kickstarter raises $75,000. The main retailer/distributor pledge level is unusual. Rather than pledging for direct copies of the game, Flying Buffalo offer retailers promotional card sets for $10.00 and a chance to order the game direct from Flying Buffalo after the campaign ends, being the first to receive copies, even before individual backers. The second retailer level offers store owners the chance to immortalize their store in a custom card.Malewicki invented and released the game in 1965, and Flying Buffalo acquired the rights to publish the game in 1970. There have been several editions and expansions (Nuclear Escalation, Nuclear Proliferation, and Weapons of Mass Destruction) published over the years. Both Nuclear War and its creator were inducted into the Origins Awards Hall of Fame in 1998.
