The new Portland-based incarnation of Heavy Metal (see "Heavy Metal to Base Its Comic Book Line in Portland") has made a big step toward strengthening its editorial content by hiring Grant Morrison as editor-in-chief, according to Entertainment Weekly. Morrison will write comics and prose for the magazine, and is reaching out to past collaborators Chris Burnham (Nameless) and Frazer Irving (Annihilator). He’s committing that Heavy Metal will be the primary focus of his comic work for a minimum of a year or two.
"We’re trying to bring back some of that 70s punk energy of Heavy Metal, but update it and make it new again," Morrison said.
Morrison's first issue, for which the cover is reporduced here, will be released in 2016.
Heavy Metal has also hired producer Brian Witten as president of the company, according to Variety. Witten’s producer and executive producer credits include Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, Dark City, American History X, and Friday the 13th.
Robert Rodriguez acquired rights to make an animated Heavy Metal film back in 2011 (see "Rodriguez to Make 'Heavy Metal' Animated Feature").
