NBC and NBC Universal International are developing a Xena: Warrior Princess reboot, THR is reporting.
The Hercules: The Legendary Journeys spinoff, which starred Lucy Lawless as the infamous Amazon warrior on a journey to redemption, is currently looking for a writer. Original executive producers Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert are already involved. There was no word on if Lawless would have a role in the project, which is being eyed for the 2016 season. The THR article quotes sources saying “the new Xena would have to have the charisma and charm of Lawless and the smarts of The Hunger Games' Katniss as producers are said to be looking for a sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation.“
The original syndicated series ran for six seasons and was distributed in more than 100 countries. The property has been licensed for books, video games, a DTV animated movie, a role-playing game from West End Games, and comics from Topps Comics, Dark Horse and more recently, Dynamite Entertainment (see “Xena Launches in July”).
