This Halloween season, a special showing of the horror classic Halloween will be shown in select theaters on Thursday, October 29th. This showing includes the feature film in its entirety along with an exclusive introduction by the director, horror legend John Carpenter, discussing the film and its influence on the horror genre.
The original Halloween, released in 1978, is considered a classic of the genre, independently produced for only $300,000 and grossing nearly $50 million in domestic ticket sales. One of Carpenter's first films, it spawned seven sequels, is often credited with the popularity of the 1980s slasher film, and launched Jamie Lee Curtis into stardom in her first role.
Halloween continues to remain an influence on geek culture; its recognizable antagonist, Michael Myers, and other Halloween imagery is still seen in toys, Halloween costumes, and other merch. The 2007 remake, directed by Rob Zombie (The Devil's Rejects), was a commercial success and created buzz for other potential classic horror remakes (see "'Hellraiser' Remake Set"). In recent years, Carpenter's movies have seen many remakes, with 1986 cult classic Big Trouble in Little China the most recent to see development (see "Dwayne Johnson in 'Big Trouble in Little China'").
