The theater count for Jem and the Holograms has dropped from over 2400 theaters to around 50 in just two weeks, according to Variety.  The film started incredibly weak, with the lowest box office gross ever for a film in over 2400 theaters (see "Hollywood’s Box Office Nightmare: Four New Films Bomb"), and went down from there.

Exhibitors reacted to the poor ticket sales by removing the film from their theaters, making room for higher grossing films such as the new James Bond film, Spectre, and The Peanuts Movie.

The problem was that the film did not connect with the fans of the original show.  Director Jon Chu reported that he was hearing from them in sometimes over-the-top ways.  "I get fans sending me hate mail, I get death threats, I get racist remarks," he said at the Film Independent Forum in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

There is a fan base for the property; IDW Publishing's $7.99 annual sold over 31,000 copies last month (see "Top 300 Comics--October 2015"), a solid number for the retro property.  But the movie was unable to get fans into theaters, and now it has nearly disappeared in record time.
