Suicide Squad director David Ayer let plans for a sequel slip in a recent report by Variety.

Ayer was discussing his next planned project, a police procedural called Bright that take place in a fantasy world, which would reteam the director with Suicide Squad star Will Smith. Apparently he told Variety he hoped the production would get rolling this year “in order to get both Ayer and Smith ready for a Suicide Squad sequel shoot by 2017.”

Warner Bros. already has several DC comic-based movie dates reserved though 2020, though all of those dates have films attached (see “Warners Announces 9 More DC Movies”). When the Suicide Squad sequel could be shoehorned into that schedule is anyone’s guess.

The trailer for Suicide Squad, which will open in theaters on August 5, can be seen here: “'Suicide Squad' Trailer.”
