Warner Bros. is developing a new Harley Quinn-led feature project which will focus on female characters in the DC Universe.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the feature will see Suicide Squad’s Margot Robbie reprise her role as Harley, as well as produce the project. Robbie is the impetus for the project, with sources saying she fell for the DC Universe female characters while doing research for her character. She enlisted a writer to develop her own project centered on the female heroines and villainesses and brought it to Warner Bros., which signed on immediately.
The characters involved are being kept under wraps, though names like Batgirl and Birds of Prey have been whispered.
With Harley Quinn a top-selling title for DC and merchandise with her likeness flying off the shelves, DC Entertainment’s parent company of Warner Bros. would be smart to capitalize on her popularity, and a female-focused film would have additional appeal to the growing audience of female superhero movie-goers.
