The new expansion includes a variety of new challenges and options for XCOM players.  A third faction has entered the fray: the paramilitary human forces of EXALT are trying to seize power out of the chaos of war against the aliens by infiltrating and sabotaging the efforts of the XCOM team.  Players must not only contend with alien invasion, but also the plots of this secretive organization. 

To help the players overcome the new threats, Evolution introduces an alien substance called Meld.  Players can earn Meld tokens by completing special missions during the game, then spend them for a variety of effects.  Eventually, the Chief Scientist can discover how to use Meld to cybernetically enhance soldiers, turning them into powerful MEC Troopers.
