A cinematic adaptation of Jeff Smith’s Bone series has been in the works for a long time, but now Warner Bros. has announced Kung Fu Panda director Mark Osborne is set to helm and executive produce the first in planned trilogy of films.

According to Variety, Osborne will co-write the script with Adam Kline. The last news on the project was in 2012, when P.J. Hogan was attached to direct, with Patrick Sean Smith writing a script (see “'Bone' Movie Gets Director”). Dan Lin’s Lin Pictures and Animal Logic are still attached to produce. The two companies produced The Lego Movie together. Lin Pictures’ Mark Bauch (The Little Prince) will executive produce alongside Osborne.

Smith’s Bone series celebrated its 25th Anniversary in July with the release of a new original graphic novel, Bone: Coda (see “New 'Bone' OGN Arriving”). The best-selling series has won numerous Eisner and Harvey awards.
