Ben Affleck is no longer slated to direct the upcoming Batman feature, but will still star as the title character, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Affleck’s stated reason is that he can’t do both jobs effectively.  "There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions," he said in a statement. "Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give.  It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require.  Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.  I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director.  I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world."

Warner Bros. expressed its support for the decision and for Affleck’s role in the film.

Rumors that change was afoot for the Batman feature have been floating for months, with rumors of problems with the script one key issue.

Now about the only things known for sure about the film are that Affleck will star, and that Joe Manganiello will play Deathstroke (see "New Pic from 'Batman'").  No firm release date has been set, although it seemed to be headed toward 2018 (see "New Dates for Geek Films"), until this latest imbroglio.  Now a release date will depend on getting an acceptable script and finding a director, both extremely high priorities for a Warner Bros. trying to keep its DC movie slate on track.
