In late January, Ben Affleck stepped down from directing the standalone Batman film (see “Affleck Off 'Batman'”) and Variety reports that a new director has stepped up: Matt Reeves.
Reeves is best known for directing Cloverfield, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes (see “'Transformers,' 'Aquaman,' 'Tomb Raider,' 'Alita,' 'Power Rangers,' 'Planet of the Apes'”). The last debuts on July 14.
Reeves has stepped into another director’s shoes before: he took the reigns on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes from Rupert Wyatt. While Reeves is no stranger to genre work, The Batman marks the first time Reeves has worked on a comic book film.
Affleck left the director’s chair to focus on performing the starring role. Filming was originally set to begin in May, but has been pushed back to give Affleck a chance to recover from his busy 2016, which included the release of The Accountant and Live by Night and shoots for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Further information about when filming will begin was not offered, but it will likely start sometime this year. A release date also has yet to be announced.
