Principal photography on the Han Solo-centered Star Wars Anthology film officially began this week at Pinewood Studios in London.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are sharing director duties on the as-yet-unnamed project. On January 30, Miller revealed via Twitter that preliminary filming on “Red Cup” (as in Solo), the working name for the film, was underway (see “'Aquaman,' 'Kong: Skull Island,' 'Han Solo,' 'Avatar'”).
The film centers on everyone’s favorite smuggler and his Wookie first mate, Chewbacca. Chewie is being played by Finnish basketball player and actor Joonas Suotamo, who stands at 6’11”. Suotamo first suited up for the role in The Force Awakens, playing stunt double to the original Chewbacca, Peter Mayhew (Suotamo is a few inches shy of Mayhew’s 7’2”).
The role of Solo is being played by Alden Ehrenreich (see "Young Han Solo Cast"). Other members of the cast include Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian (see “’Han Solo,’ More”), Woody Harrelson as Solo’s mentor (see “Woody Harrelson For 'Han Solo' Film”), and Emilia Clarke in an undisclosed role (see "'Black Panther,' 'Han Solo'"). Han Solo opens May 25, 2018.
Marvel Comics has been lining up plenty of Han Solo-related comics to sell. Star Wars: Han Solo by Marjorie Liu and Mark Books (see “Star Wars 'Han Solo' Comic Series Announced”) is launching in June. Marvel released the trade paperback collection of the previous Han Solo series in January.
