Ulisses North America, a division of the German RPG publisher Ulisses Spiele, has finally revealed its long-awaited new version of the multi-genre role playing game Torg.  The new edition, Torg Eternity will release in December.  The initial release will include the Core Rules, the Game Master’s Screen and Archetypes Pack, and Torg game accessories.

Ulisses announced plans to relaunch the venerable game in 2015 (see “‘Torg’ RPG Returns”).  Like the original game, Torg Eternity imagines a near-future Earth that has been invaded by beings from alternate worlds called “cosm,” each with their own physical laws called Axioms.  Characters gain their abilities based on the cosm they call home, thus allowing players to mix-and-match various genres in their game.

Torg Eternity features an updated and modernized ruleset while retaining core elements of the original design.  Players still roll a 20-sided die on a “Bonus Chart” to resolve actions, with some results “exploding” to allow the addition of another die.  The new version adds an “exploding” six-sided Bonus Die as well.  Combat is regulated through a deck of cards called the Drama Deck, while players can use Destiny Cards and Cosm Cards to modify the game world or gain bonuses to their actions.  The game rules have also been rebalanced and simplified.

The game setting also received an overhaul, with the design team revisiting every cosm and bringing them in line with the game’s overall narrative.

The heart of the new edition will be the Torg Eternity Core Rules book, a 280-page full color hardcover book that includes background information, character creation, and the game rules.  MSRP is $49.99.

The Game Master’s Screen and Archetypes Pack is an accessory intended for the game master.  It includes a three-panel hardboard screen for the GM to hid their notes, plus 16 card stock prints of the game’s archetype characters that can be used by the players.  MSRP is $24.99.

A Day One Adventure Book offers players a way to start in the game by playing through the initial events of the Possibility Wars.  This 144-page full color hardcover book will be MSRP $29.99.

These accessories will also be available:

  • The 180-card Drama Deck allows players to use the card-based mechanics with the game.  MSRP is $24.99.
  • The Torg Eternity Dice will be a set of mottled blue and red dice.  The set includes a pair of 20-sided dice and a pair of the new 6-sided Bonus Dice.  MSRP is $9.99.
  • Possibility Chips is a set of 20 ceramic poker-style chips that players can use to keep track of their character’s Possibility points.  Each chip sports a different image.  MSRP is $19.99.

A poster map, character sheet pad, game tokens, and miniatures are also planned.

The game is currently being funded via a Kickstarter campaign, which has raised more than $150,000 from almost 900 backers as of this writing, well over its $8,000 goal. There is a retailer level of $1 to preorder copies when the game is ready to ship.

Ulisses North America will be partnered with Paizo, who will handle distribution of the game on behalf of Ulisses.  The two companies have previously partnered to release  the English edition of the Ulisses role playing game, The Dark Eye (see “New Titles, New Schedule for ‘Dark Eye’”).
