Ares Games continues to diversify its portfolio of partners for distribution in the United States, this time adding U. K. game maker Phalanx Games, publisher of Hannibal & Hamilcar – Rome vs. Carthage.
Hannibal & Hamilcar – Rome vs. Carthage is the 20th Anniversary edition of Mark Simonitch’s classic two-player simulation of the Second Punic War, first published by Avalon Hill in 1996. The game uses a card-driven system to control not only the movement of armies but also the political and social upheavals that surrounded that war.
The new edition features updated and streamlined game mechanics as well as new scenarios and variants. Among the new material is an alternative First Punic War scenario that follows the efforts of Hamilcar against the Romans. This new option adds naval combat to the game. The game components and graphics have also received an update.
Hannibal & Hamilcar was developed by Simonitch and Jaro Andruszkiewicz (1944: Race to the Rhine, The Magnates: A Game of Power). The result is a faster-playing game, with some scenarios playable in half an hour.
In addition to the new Hannibal & Hamilcar, the new deal between Ares and Phalanx will cover the entire Phalanx catalog, including Germania Magna: Border in Flames and Hunger: The Show. The new distribution deal goes into effect starting in November.
Earlier this year, Ares announced a deal with Galakta to distribute their games, including This War of Mine: The Board Game (see "Ares to Distribute Galakta Games"). In October, Ares will release the highly-anticipated Hunt for the Ring (see "Ares Previews 'The Hunt for the Ring'").
