Canadian publisher Groundwood Books has released a graphic novel adaptation of the Academy Award-nominated animated film The Breadwinner, which itself is based on Deborah Ellis’ bestselling children’s novel series of the same name.

The graphic novel is adapted directly from the 2017 film produced by Cartoon Saloon, directed by Nora Twomey an executive produced by Angelina Jolie and Mimi Polk Gitlin.  Set in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, the story follows the girl Parvana, who must dress as a boy to provide for her family after her father is arrested.  The 80-page graphic novel is available in both hardcover ($18.95) and paperback ($14.95).

The film has already won both the Lost Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Animation and the Toronto Film Critics Association Award for Best Animated Feature.  It was also nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Animated.  The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature (along with Coco, Loving Vincent, Ferdinand, and The Boss Baby) for the 90th Academy Awards, which will be held on March 4.

The film’s trailer can be seen below.
