The cyber-magic world of Shadowrun is the setting for the upcoming board game from Catalyst Game Labs and Lynnvander Studios entitled Shadowrun:  Sprawl Ops, releasing in October.

Created by Dylan Birtolo (co-creator of Dragonfire) and the team at Lynnvander Studios, Shadowrun:  Sprawl Ops puts players in control of their own team of “shadowrunners” -independent hired guns who operate in the murky underworld.  Their ultimate goal is to rack up one big score that will set them up for life by getting past the operatives of the Megacorporations that rule the city before their rival teams can pull it off.

The game combines a worker placement style mechanic with a push-your-luck dice system.  First, players recruit and deploy individual shadowrunners to various locations around the city, allowing them to acquire upgraded gear, get an edge on their next run, or get a mission to earn more cash.  Once they’re ready, the players resolve the run, using the custom dice to try to get the right combinations of symbols to bypass the multiple stages of their mission.  Success brings rewards, but along the way injuries can force the player’s team to spend precious turns recovering.

Shadowrun:  Sprawl Ops will come with 120 cards, 36 custom etched dice, 4 player boards, 16 standees with plastic bases, 1 main game board, 1 score tracker, 50 tokens, and 5 final mission boards.  The base game will support 2 to 4 players.

Catalyst is funding the production of Shadowrun:  Sprawl Ops through a Kickstarter campaign that has attracted $74,242 in pledged support from 855 backers as of this writing (an average of $86.83 per backer), with 21 days remaining.  The campaign includes an option exclusively for retailers who will have access to a special retailer-only pledge manager after the campaign concludes.

Catalyst plans to release the game into distribution after the campaign, but no trade information is currently available.

A new version of the deck building game Shadowrun Crossfire will release this summer (see “Catalyst Reboots ‘Shadowrun Crossfire’”).
