Marvel will launch a new Captain Marvel series ahead of her big screen debut in March.

Captain Marvel #1 will launch on January 2. The series is written by Kelly Thompson (Jem and the Holograms, A-Force, Hawkeye) and drawn by Carmen Carnero (DC Comics Bombshells, Wonder Woman), with a first issue cover by Amanda Conner.

The new series will bring Carol Danvers back to New York City, where she will face new threats and new opportunities. Thompson said the series will be a new jumping on point that will pick up after the events of Margaret Stohl’s Life of Captain Marvel series (see “Marvel Relaunching 'Captain Marvel' With YA Author Margaret Stohl”).

Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel opens in theaters on March 8.
