Comics and graphic novel sales to comic stores continued to improve in September and Q3, but still showed declines for the year-to-date according to information released by Diamond Comic Distributors. For a change, graphic novels led the way, with 11.74% growth in September over the same period last year, vs. only .75% growth for comics. Both categories combined were up 3.84% overall in September.
The September numbers were still below 2016 numbers, as September 2017 was a very weak month, with graphic novel sales down 13.14% vs. 2016, comic sales down 2.98%, and the combined categories down 6.07%.
For Q3, comics were up 7.44% vs. the year-ago period, graphic novels were up 1.95%, and the two categories combined were up 5.81%.
The recently improving trends have not quite overcome the very weak early part of the year; comics and graphic novel sales combined are down .55% for the first nine months of 2018, with comic sales up 1.25% and graphic novels down 4.8% vs. the same period last year.
Market shares showed fairly typical alignment, with Marvel Comics’ share over 10 points greater than DC Comics. Dark Horse Comics pulled ahead of IDW Publishing for September.
