Florida resident Phillip Weisbauer was arrested by Phoenix police earlier this month after attempting to sell four comic books from a stolen collection.

According to ABC 15 in Phoenix, Weisbauer was arrested after attempting to sell four comic books worth nearly $100,000 to a Phoenix comic book store. Initially Weisbauer attempted to sell them on January 8, but left, after which the police were alerted. Weisbauer returned to negotiate on Jan. 10, and when he left the store, police followed him to a home where he was later arrested, according to the report. The four comics were reported stolen by a man in Boca Raton, Florida.  Weisbauer was charged with theft and trafficking in stolen property.

From Bleeding Cool
Bleeding Cool first reported the theft, and published the owner’s impassioned plea for their return, on January 9. Randy Lawrence, comic book collector and Pedigree Comics’ Comic Art Consignment Director, of Boca Raton, Florida had 439 CGC graded books stolen from his indoor air-conditioned, double locked storage unit. The titles were all Batman and Detective Comics, and according to Lawrence were his nest egg.   The extensive list, which includes Batman #2 - 8 from 1939, were listed in several screenshots from CGC Collectors Society on Bleeding Cool.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office investigated the break-in that happened sometime between Nov. 28 and Jan 8 when Lawrence reported the theft, the Sun Sentinel reported. He said the locks were not broken, but some boxes had been moved and a wire was hanging from the ceiling, so he postulated the thief came in through the roof, according to the report.
