Star Trek: Picard was confirmed at Star Trek Las Vegas by Patrick Stewart himself last summer (see “Patrick Stewart Returns to 'Star Trek'”). Producer Alex Kurtzman to the LA Times earlier this month that the show will debut later this year.
“The mandate was to make it a more psychological show, a character study about this man in his emeritus years,” Kurtzman said in the interview. “There are so few shows that allow a significantly older protagonist to be the driver.”
The trailer opens on a vineyard, which makes perfect sense to anyone who knows Jean-Luc. Then a gentle voice over (which sounds a lot like Gina Torres from Firefly, and Torres has done a lot of voice work for Star Wars animated shows and geeky video games lately) begins probing Picard why things turned out the way they did.
