Free League Publishing, in partnership with original publisher Game Designers’ Workshop and Amargosa Press, will release a new edition of the classic roleplaying game Twilight: 2000, the company announced.  Several other companies are also involved in the project: Amargosa Press, which recently acquired a license to produce a new edition of the Dark Conspiracy RPG originally published by GDW; Polish RPG publisher Black Monk Games, which will consult on the setting and publish a Polish edition; and Far Future Enterprises (which has published new printings of the original game and is publisher of Traveler 5E).

Free League founder Tomas Harenstam (Alien RPG, Mutant: Year Zero) will lead the design team, with setting and scenario by Chris Lites (Conan), editing by Angus Abranson (The One Ring), interior art by Niklas Brant, cover art by Martin Grip, and maps by Tobias Tranell.  The team will also work with active and retired U.S. service members as consultants.

The new release, a boxed set for sandbox roleplaying, will be the fourth edition of the game; the first was published in 1984.

The primary setting is an alternate 2000 in which the Moscow Coup of 1991 succeeded and the Soviet Union did not collapse, putting the players in a devastated Poland after World War III.  There will also be an alternate Swedish setting and tools for placing the game anywhere in the world.

The rules will be built on the Year Zero Engine used in Mutant: Year Zero and Forbidden Lands, which use a "hexcrawling system" for core gameplay.

Free League will release the new edition of Twilight 2000 in early 2021, after a Kickstarter campaign this August.
