An online campaign is urging consumers to translate support for Black Lives Matter, a position now held by a majority of Americans according to recent polls, into support for Black creators this week. The challenge to consumers is to purchase two books by Black creators the week of June 14 to June 20, pushing them up the bestseller list. “Our goal is to Blackout bestseller lists with Black voices,” according to the campaign’s statement.
The campaign originated with Amistad Press, an imprint of HarperCollins, according to Publishers Weekly, but is now widespread on social media. Retailers of geek culture have the opportunity to promote graphic novels, roleplaying games, and other book titles to offer consumers ways to participate in this campaign.
