The classic newspaper comic strip Mandrake the Magician is the inspiration for a new comic from Red 5 Studios, but everything is different this time.

Mandrake the Magician: Mandrake’s Legacy, a new series that will debut on October 28, is a young adult comic with a female protagonist. Seventeen-year-old Mandy Paz is studying magic, but there’s more to her tricks than meets the eye: She has some magical superpowers that she’s still learning to control. The usual high school drama escalates from mean girls to literal monsters as Mandy tries to figure out whether her powers are hereditary (her mom won’t say who her dad is) and how best to use them.

The writer for the series is Erica Schulz (M3, Daredevil) and the artists are Diego Giribaldi, Juan Pablo Massa and Moncho Bunge of StoneBot Studios. Amelia Vidal will do the main covers while Evelin Unfer will do variants.

Mandrake the Magician was created by Lee Falk (who also created The Phantom); the newspaper strip about a crime-fighting magician ran from 1934 to 2013. Red 5 is publishing the comic under a license from King Features Syndicate.
