IDW Publishing will take Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the rest of the Enterprise crew into the Mirror Universe in a new series, Star Trek: The Mirror War, which will debut with issue #0 on Star Trek Day, September 8.

The full editorial event will include issues #0-8 and four one-shot tie-ins, each starring a different member of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast.  The first tie-in, scheduled for December, will feature Data.

The writers for the series are longtime Star Trek comics hands Scott and David Tipton, and the artist is Carlos Nieto.  The #0 issue will have a main cover by Nieto, a variant cover by Ejiwa “Edge” Dbenebe, and a retailer incentive cover by Bex Glendining. J.K. Woodward will be the cover artist for issue #1 and all subsequent issues.

In the Mirror Universe, which dates back to an episode of the original Star Trek television series, the characters are calculating and unscrupulous versions of their regular selves.  Captain Jean-Luc Picard has long been an icon of integrity and leadership, but the new series will flip that image as he tries to leverage some new information to gain power and riches.  The series will bring in events from previous Mirror Universe stories but will be completely accessible to new readers.

It's been a while since IDW has paid major attention to the Mirror Universe; two titles were launched back in 2008 (see "IDW Unveils Trek Plans for 2008").  With a year-long event, IDW is now bringing this area of the Star Trek mythos to the fore.
