Scout Comics has inked a deal with Hyperkinetic Studios to publish a comics adaptation of Hyperkinetic’s Epic Tavern video game. Epic Tavern’s Tales from the Fantastical Crimes Unit will be written by Shawn French, the lead writer of the game, with art by Steve Mardo (Murder Hobo) and colors by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles colorist Steve Lavigne. Scout will publish the comic under its Black Caravan horror/sci-fi imprint, with the first issue scheduled for October. An ashcan preview is available at the publisher’s website.

The story of Epic Tavern’s Tales from the Fantastical Crimes Unit #1 follows the quest of a tough-guy detective, a young magician, and their undead animal assistants as they search for a missing centaur. Clues are hidden throughout the comic that readers can follow into the game and then back again to unlock new storylines and a special Final Boss battle.

“It’s rare for a writer to get to adapt their own work into another medium,” French said in the announcement. “Usually, you’re handing it off and making a million compromises in the process. Instead, we get to pick through hundreds of Epic Tavern quests and characters, and combine our very favorites into a new comic adventure.”
