DC today announced a new Black Adam series, by writer Christopher Priest and artist Rafa Sandoval, that introduces a new character into the world of Teth-Adam. In the new series, Adam is infected by a deadly plague that destroys his immortality. He transfers his powers to a successor, who will redeem his legacy and defend his kingdom, but when Adam is cured and the two become mystically “handcuffed” together, the result is a new, dysfunctional super-team. The first issue will be published on June 21 with a main cover by Irvin Rodriguez, variant covers by Rafa Sandoval, Mikel Janin, and Lucio Parrillo, a 1:25 variant cover by Crystal Kung, a 1:50 throwback variant cover by Cully Hamner, a 1:100 foil variant cover by Lucio Parrillo, and a team variant cover by Travis Mercer and Danny Miki. The 32-page comic will have an MSRP of $3.99 for the regular edition, $4.99 for card stock variants.

“DC has provided an amazing opportunity for me to explore and, to some degree, reimagine this character in a very new light while bringing new challenges and consequences to a man who has lived far too long and is desperate for redemption,” Priest said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “Rafa Sandoval brings palpable voltage to every panel, bringing out my Kirby-Simonson Big Noise instinct as Rafa’s gifts take me to places I never knew I wanted to go. My only regret is we only have 22 pages a month for this.”

Warner Bros. recently announced that the Black Adam film will premiere on October 21, 2022 (see “Warner Bros. Changes Dates for Five DC Movies”). DC also plans a box set of Black Adam graphic novels that will be released in July (see “DC to Publish ‘Black Adam’ Box Set Ahead of Movie”).
