Dynamite is setting the next Red Sonja spinoff, Samurai Sonja, in Sengoku-era Japan, a historical period of constant civil war. This new Sonja is the daughter of a slain samurai who takes up her father’s sword and goes forth into the world to continue her family’s legacy. Caught in a life-or-death situation, she makes a bargain with the goddess Amaterasu: The goddess bestows upon her set of powerful weapons and a magical suit of armor, but the price is that if Sonja falls in battle, her family will disappear from history forever.

The new series will be written by Jordan Clark, whose credits include Aquaman and Star Wars Adventures; he was just selected by DC to participate in in the Milestone Initiative program (see “DC Announces First Milestone Initiative Talent Program Participants”). The artist is Pasquale Qualano, who was the artist for Sonjaversal, the series that established the existence of multiple Sonjas (see “Preview: ‘Sonjaversal’ #1”); he will work with colorist Kike J. Diaz and letterer Jeff Eckleberry. The first issue will also have covers by Lucio Parrillo, Lesley "Leirix" Li, Clayton Henry, and Paulina Ganucheau.
