Mad Cave has announced a new original graphic novel in its Maverick young adult line: In the Shadow of the Throne, by writer Kate Sheridan and artist Gaia Cardinali. Teenager Jordan is just looking for a break from his annoying family when he stumbles into the mystical realm of Lymeria. The royal family there is caught up in an epic struggle, and the prince needs his help to not only unlock the family’s long-held secrets but ultimately save the kingdom itself. The 176-page paperback will go on sale on August 30 with an MSRP of $14.99.

In the Shadow of the Throne was initially announced in 2020 (see “Mad Cave Announces 2022 Lineup”).

“As a queer kid who had dreamed of running away to a fantasy world and finding drama, danger, magic, and romance, In the Shadow of the Throne has a special place in my heart,” said Sheridan in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I wanted to tell the kind of story that I wanted when I was that age, and I hope it resonates with teens today.” Her previous work includes the original graphic novel Adventure Time with Fionna & Cake: Party Bash Blues. Cardinali is an Italian creator whose debut graphic novel, Viktoria, won two awards in Italy.
