Writer Ryan North has announced two new projects in his newsletter: He will write a Star Trek: Lower Decks miniseries for IDW and will team up with Erica Henderson to co-write Danger and Other Unknown Risks, a young adult graphic novel to be published by the Penguin Random House imprint Penguin Workshop.

Star Trek: Lower Decks will be based on the animated comedy series, created by Rick and Morty producer Mike McMahan, that looks at the life of the support staff of the starship Cerritos. The series runs on the Paramount+ streaming service, which recently ordered a fourth season (see “‘Star Trek’ Renewals”). The comic, written by North with art by Chris Fenoglio, will be published by IDW. The first issue is slated for September 14 and will have a cover A by Fenoglio and a cover B by Jay Fosgitt, as well as a retailer incentive cover.

Danger and Other Unknown Risks will be co-written by North and Henderson with art by Henderson. “This is a fun and funny adventure story about a young woman and her talking dog who set out into a dangerous world to save it from ruin,” North said in his newsletter, “but it's also a story about friendship and the nature of heroism and family and what we owe to each other.  In the same way that Squirrel Girl took the basics of the superhero genre and elevated them by considering what a smart, empathic young woman would do in that situation, Danger And Other Unknown Risks is taking the basics of the heroic quest genre and asking similar questions - with a pretty big twist.” The book will be out on April 4, 2023; the paperback will have an MSRP of $16.99 and the hardcover will have an MSRP of $24.99.

Marvel has plans for a 1,500+ page collection of Squirrel Girl comics that includes North and Henderson’s run on the series (see “Marvel to Omnibize ‘The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl’”).
