Created in 1982 by writer Roger Stern and artist John Romita Jr., Rambeau first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man Annual#16. She started out as the second Captain Marvel, was a member and a leader of the Avengers, and later on teamed up with the Ultimates. She has had several different alter egos, and while Monica Rambeau: Photon may be her first solo comic, she got top billing in Captain America: Monica Rambeau, a 2019 collection that included her appearances from a number of different series (see “Top Graphic Novels—January 2019”), and she also starred in two one-shots, both titled Captain Marvel #1, both written by Dwayne McDuffie with art by Mark D. Bright; one was published in 1989 and the other in 1994. Rambeau was portrayed by Teyonah Parris in the television show Wandavision (see “‘Wandavision’”).
“Monica's character has a long history in the Marvel Universe, but she's way overdue for getting her own story told,” said Ewing in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I'm picking the pen up from the legend himself, Dwayne McDuffie, who put out the last Monica Rambeau solo adventure almost three decades ago. It's a privilege and I'm excited to tell the story in a way that both highlights her incredible cosmic abilities as well as her everyday, relatable struggles. I hope this will be a title that has something equal to offer to veteran readers and folks who may be brand new to comics.”
