Groot, the sentient tree who gained new popularity in Guardians of the Galaxy (both the comics and the film) will star in a new comics miniseries, simply titled Groot, that will reveal his origin story as well as his early battles. The comic will be written by Dan Abnett, who brought Groot into the Guardians of the Galaxy during his run on the eponymous comic in 2008. Damian Couciero (Ghost Rider: Return of Vengeance, X-Force) will be the artist for the four-issue series; the first issue will go on sale on May 3, 2023, with a cover by Lee Garbett.

This is not Groot’s first solo series; I Am Groot, by writer Christopher Hastings and artist Flaviano, was published in 2017 (see “Preview: ‘I Am Groot’ #1”).

Groot’s roots go back to 1960, when he appeared in Tales to Astonish #13, and the character popped up from time to time before Abnett and artist Andy Lanning made him part of the team that survived Annihilation: Conquest crossover and became the new Guardians of the Galaxy.

In addition to film and comics appearances, Groot is featured in an animated series on Disney+ (see “Marvel Movie and TV News Roundup”) and a card game (see “Funko Games Unveils ‘Something Wild! Marvel Holiday Baby Groot”). With the third GotG film due out in May, Marvel is also teasing a “Grootfall” event as part of its new Guardians of the Galaxy series (see “New Core Team for Guardians of the Galaxy”).
