Marvel Comics is bringing the Guardians of the Galaxy back to comics with a new creative team and a new core lineup, just a month before the release of the third GotG film.

The new series will be co-written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly, who also collaborated on Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty, and the artist will be Kev Walker (Predator). The core team of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Nebula, and Mantis will be dealing with a new threat, Grootfall, as well as the aftermath of the events of a year ago, including their betrayal by one of the team. Guardians of the Galaxy #1 will be released on April 12, 2023, with a cover by Marco Checchetto and a Grootfall teaser variant by Walker. Marvel also released Walker’s designs for the core characters.

“Welcome to a whole new era for the Guardians of the Galaxy, riding like mad through an endless alien dust storm of sun-soaked tragedy, intense violence, and deeply dysfunctional heroes,” Lanzing said in a statement released with the announcement. “The optimistic peacekeepers that defeated the reborn Olympian Gods and overcame ‘The Last Annihilation’ have fallen about as far as they possibly could - and now Peter Quill and what remains of his found family will have to fight like hell in a new western-fueled frontier to find a scrap of forgiveness. After all, the Guardians are a fire - and a fire only ends one way.”

The last lineup change for the GotG came in February 2021, when Al Ewing and Juan Frigeri took over the series (see “Marvel Comics Unveils the New Members of Al Ewing’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’”).

The new comics series comes just before the premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will be released in May (see “‘Guardians of the Galaxy’”).
