Candlewick Press, which specializes in books for young readers, has given ICv2 an exclusive first look at its Fall 2023 graphic novel lineup, which includes a guide to relationships by Webcomic Name creator Alex Norris and a fresh volume of Two-Headed Chicken, the middle-grade series by Origami Yoda creator Tom Angleberger.

The five Fall 2023 graphic novels range from early readers to young adults. Here’s a look.

How to Love: A Guide to Feelings & Relationships for Everyone by Alex Norris: Norris is the creator of Webcomic Name, the wryly cute webcomic that has over 750,000 followers on Instagram and is famous for ending every strip with the same punch line (oh no), but is tied up in a lawsuit right now (see “Creator of ‘Webcomic Name’ Raises Almost $250,000 for Legal Fees”). While How to Love has the same simple lines and pastel colors, it’s a very different book: a guide to the ups and downs of young love, written in a conversational tone and designed to be inclusive of many different types of relationships. The 224-page hardcover is rated for readers 14 and up and will go on sale on November 14, 2023, with an MSRP of $17.99.

Two-Headed Chicken: Beak to the Future by Tom Angleberger: Angleberger first hit the middle-grade funny bone with Origami Yoda, and he followed that up with a string of graphic novels, including a reinvented Geronimo Stilton (see “Geronimo Stilton Gets a New Look in Graphix GN”) and Doorways to Danger, featuring the classic Disney characters (see “IDW to Publish ‘Doorways to Danger’ OGN”). The second episode of Two-Headed Chicken is a time-travel story filled with crazy characters and silly escapades, rated for ages 8-12. Candelwick will release the 208-page hardcover on September 12, 2023, with an MSRP of $12.99.

Yaqui Delgado Wants to Kick Your Ass by Meg Medina and Mel Valentine Vargas: This is a graphic adaptation of Medina’s best-selling novel about a Latina teen dealing with a fractured family, a new school, and a bully whose campaign of harassment threatens to cut her off from the people who care about her. Candlewick will publish the 288-page graphic novel, rated for ages 14 and up, on September 5, 2023, in two formats, a hardcover with an MSRP of $19.99 and a paperback with an MSRP of $12.99.

One in a Million by Claire Lordon: Lordon recounts her experience with chronic illness during her last two years of high school in this graphic memoir that’s aimed at readers 14 and up. Plagued by mysterious symptoms that turned out to be due to a brain tumor, Lordon spend much of those two years dealing with her medical problems and facing her fear and depression, while finding comfort in her family, friends, and art. The 272-page paperback will be released on October 10, 2023, with an MSRP of $16.99.

See the Ghost: Three Stories About Things You Cannot See by David LaRochelle and Mike Wohnoutka: This early-reader graphic novel makes gentle fun of primers, with a dog and a cat puzzled by the wind, a ghost, and a fairy. This is the third in a series that started out with the Geisel Award-winning See the Cat and the followup See the Dog. The three books share the same characters but can be read on their own. Aimed at readers aged 4-8, the 64-page hardcover will go on sale on July 25, 2023 with an MSRP of $9.99.
