In Miles Davis and the Search for the Sound, Chisholm uses Davis’s recovery from a 1982 stroke as the framing tale for his story, as the musician, unable to play the trumpet, tries to regain coordination by scribbling and drawing. The story, told largely in Davis’s own words, focuses on his quest to find a particular sound he heard as a child, moving forward from the 1950s through the 1970s as Davis masters his craft and pushes out into new frontiers.
