Mark Russell, who won a 2022 Eisner Award for Not All Robots, will return to AWA for another limited series, Rumpus Room, starting in September 2023. Russell will collaborate with artist Ramon Rosanas and colorist Ive Svorcina for the series, which will mix his trademark satirical wit with a grisly take on a reality-TV trope: Tech billionaire Bob Schrunk has locked up an array of different people he dislikes in an underground “rumpus room,” and each week, the prisoners have to decide which one of them will be removed and ground up to become an ingredient in the special skin cream Schrunk must use to treat a disfiguring condition. The five-issue series will launch on September 20, 2023, and the first issue will have two covers by Tony Harris and a variant cover by Russell.
“Rumpus Room is a parable for how in American civilization, on some level, we’re set against each other by forces that are too powerful for us to reach,” Russell said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “It parallels the underlying assumption of American life as well: ‘I can’t do anything about the real things that are destroying me, so I’ll take all my rage out against the people who cross me.’ Rumpus Room is about this misguided anger that we all have and how it weaponizes us against each other.”
