In 1978, a year after he teamed up with John Wagner to create 2000AD, Pat Mills became the consulting editor on a new comic, one that he envisioned as “the female 2000AD.” He took the title from the film Play Misty for Me and his inspiration from horror films such as Carrie and Audrey Rose; the stories in Misty were creepy supernatural tales, often with a psychological element. The comic launched with a circulation of 170,000, slightly less than other girls’ weeklies of the time, and lasted less than two years before being merged with other, blander girls’ comics. Nonetheless, Misty carried stories by some of the best writers and artists of the time and was popular with boys as well as girls.
Rebellion, the publisher of 2000AD, acquired Misty along with other classic British titles when it purchased the archives of the Fleetway and IPC publishing groups in 2016 (see "Rebellion Acquires Fleetway and IPC Youth Group Archives").
