Four Gathered for Christmas Eve is a collection of Christmas-themed horror stories that evokes the holiday ghost stories beloved of Victorians, but with a modern comics twist: The creators themselves are part of the story. The stories are written by Eric Powell, James Harren, Becky Cloonan, and Mike Mignola; Powell will do the art for his and Harren’s stories, while Cloonan and Mignola will draw their own. Powell and Dave Stewart are the colorists, and Richard Starkings is doing the lettering. The 72-page deluxe hardcover, designed by Phil Balsman, will be released on December 12, 2023, in bookstores and December 13, 2023, in comic shops, with an MSRP of $24.99.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, Powell said he had been thinking about doing a Victorian Christmas ghost book for a while: “As someone who unapologetically loves Christmas and spooky stories, I’ve always been intrigued that telling ghost stories used to be a regular part of the tradition,” he said.
Dark Horse Comics will publish the book under Powell's Albatross Funnybooks imprint (see “Exclusive: Eric Powell’s Albatross Funnybooks Moves to Dark Horse”)
