Oni Press has announced five new miniseries that will launch monthly, beginning in December with Invasive, by writer Cullen Bunn and artist Jesús Hervás. The series span a variety of genres and are all three or four issues long. Here’s the lineup:
Invasive, by Bunn and Hervás, is a medical horror story about an underground “hospital” where horrific operations are performed, and the doctor who sets out to stop them after her daughter is victimized. The four-issue series will launch in December 2023 with covers by Hervás, Luana Vecchio, Brian Level, and Jae Lee.
Jill and the Killers, by writer Olivia Cuartero-Briggs and artist Roberta Ingranata, follows Jill, a teenager whose mother has disappeared and whose schoolmates are all addicted to a true-crime game, one that seems to hold some answers to a series of mysterious disappearances. The four-issue series will launch in January 2024, and the double-sized, 48-page first issue will have covers by Sanya Anwar, Marguerite Sauvage, and Alison Sampson.
Cemetery Kids Don’t Die, by writer Zac Thompson and artist Daniel Irizarri, is a trapped-in-the-game story set in the 21st century, when people play games in their sleep. Four friends with deeply unhappy lives meet through the game and explore it together. When one of their friends doesn’t wake up, though, the game gets ugly as the other three have to navigate its treacherous landscapes to find their friend. The first issue of the four-issue series will be released in February 2024 with covers by Irizarri and Dustin Weaver.
Night People is adapted by writer Chris Condon from a novel by Barry Gifford (co-creator with David Lynch of Lost Highway—Night People), with art by Brian Level, Alexandre Tefenkgi, and Artyom Topilin, who tag-team each other through a set of four interlocking stories set in the seedier areas of the South. The first one follows two lovers, recently released from prison, who decide they are going to cleanse the world of the evil of men, a project that includes kidnapping a mild-mannered lawyer in hopes of reeducating him. The four-issue series will launch in March 2024, and the first issue will have covers by Brian Level, Joëlle Jones, and J.H. Williams III.
Akogun: Brutalizer of Gods, by writer Murewa Ayodele and artist Dotun Akande, is an African spin on epic fantasy in the tradition of Conan the Barbarian, with a man fighting the gods on an ancient continent. The series is complete in three oversized issues, with the first one due out in April 2024 with a cover by Akande.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, Oni Press President and publisher Hunter Gorinson described the five new series as “maximalist comics made for maximum impact, with stories and formats specifically tailored to allow creators to do their best and most daring work.”
“The first semester of ONI 2024 delivers something for every reader, with stories that are rooted in genre, but twist and turn and deliver new ideas from a delightful cast of established and up-and-coming storytellers," added Editor in Chief Sierra Hahn. "Is it 2024 yet?!"
