Scout Comics has announced the release date for their relaunch of The Maze Agency. Mike W. Barr created the series in 1988, and it has been published by Comico, Innovation, Caliber Comics and IDW Publishing over the years (see “Scout to Publish ‘The Maze Agency’”). Scout's relaunch, with art by Silvio Beltramo, will debut on December 13, 2023. The first issue will have a main cover by Beltramo and a 1:5 retailer incentive variant by Alan Davis.
The mystery comic stars Jennifer Mays, private detective and owner of the New York-based Maze Agency, and Gabriel Webb, her boyfriend and true-crime author. In the first issue, Jen and Gabe have to solve a murder on the set of a slasher film.
The series features a classic Thin Man/Moonlighting-style romantic detective partnership. In contrast to the thriller genre, Maze Agency stories are fair-play mysteries, inspired by Ellery Queen, which means the reader should be given all the clues to solve the crimes as they read. That makes it something unusual in the current comic market.
