Writer and Eisner Award-winning colorist Jordie Bellaire will be the writer of Princess Gwenevere as the writer of Princess Gwenevere and the Jewel Riders, a new graphic novel series to be released by Mad Cave’s YA imprint Maverick. Koi Carreon is the artist for the series, Sarah Davidson is the colorist, and Chas! Pangburn is the letterer. The first volume, rated for grades 7-9, will be released on May 28, 2024, as a 120-page paperback with an MSRP of $14.99.

The story is a more nuanced take on the original action-fantasy cartoon; in the graphic novel, Princess Gwenevere has taken a leave of absence from the Jewel Riders to prepare to become the queen of Avalon, but she is pulled back when Merlin begins behaving erratically, heralding the return of an old enemy to the kingdom.

Mad Cave signed a deal earlier this year to create graphic novels based on two 1990s-vintage animated properties from 41 Entertainment (see “Exclusive: Mad Cave Inks Deal with 41 Entertainment”). Princess Gwenevere & the Jewel Riders ran in 1995-96 and was the basis for Rachel Roberts’ YA Avalon: Web of Magic novels, which in turn were adapted into Avalon: The Warlock Diaries, a graphic novel trilogy published by Seven Seas.
