Acclaimed comic writer James Tynion IV has launched Tiny Onion, a new independent production house with seed funding from independent production company Lyrical Media, the companies announced. The new company plans projects across publishing, film, television, and animation. Tynion, whose most successful work is the Something Is Killing the Chldren universe for BOOM! Studios, will serve as CEO & Founder of the new company.
In publishing, Tiny Onion plans to curate and package projects for publication by companies including BOOM!, Dark Horse, DSTLRY, and Image Comics. Tiny Onion will manage much of Tynion’s existing intellectual property, and is developing projects across multiple media. UTA, which currently represents Tynion and Lyrical Media, will also represent Tiny Onion media rights.
"Over the last twelve years, I've watched the comics industry from the inside, working alongside its best talent and biggest publishers, seeing the exciting ways that it can connect to other media spaces, and I've managed to work my way to some prominence," Tynion said in a statement accompanying the announcement. "Now I have the chance to take everything I've learned and test out every way to make it work even better. Not just for me, but for the generation of creators coming up behind me… We’re going to develop worlds on the scale of what we did with Something is Killing the Children, and then we’re going to decide how to bring them into each of the verticals our company is touching."
Tiny Onion’s Editorial Director will be former BOOM! editor Eric Harburn, who helped develop Tynion’s projects there. Courtney Menard, formerly Creative and Production Director at Z2 Comics, and freelance marketer Jazzlyn Stone, have also joined Tiny Onion as Director of Production and Director of Communications Director, respectively.
