Modiphius Entertainment has teamed up with Anderson Entertainment to produce a tabletop role-playing game based on the 1970s science fiction television series Space: 1999. The new game will launch later this year, shortly before the show’s 50th Anniversary in 2025.
Running for two seasons starting in 1975, Space: 1999 was one of the most expensive television shows to be produced by that time and it was the second of creator Gerry Anderson’s (perhaps best known for “supermarionation” shows Fireball XL5 and Thunderbirds) live-action science fiction endeavors, following UFO. The show was set on Moonbase Alpha, a permanent settlement on the Moon, following a massive nuclear explosion that sends the Moon flying out of the solar system.
The game allows players to take on a variety of roles as one of Moonbase Alpha’s 311 crewmembers, including pilot of the iconic Eagle transporters, base security, medic, or commander. It is built on a variation of Modiphius’ 2d20 system, also used for licensed games Fallout: The RPG, Dune: Adventures in the Imperium, and Star Trek Adventures.
The new game will be produced in concert with Anderson Entertainment and will feature writing by Andrew Peregrine (whose previous credits include Dune: Adventure in the Imperium, Doctor Who: The Roleplaying Game, and Star Trek Adventures).
This year, Modiphius is also releasing a second edition of Star Trek Adventures (see “Modiphius Announces ‘Star Trek Adventures RPG 2E’”) and has announced plans for games based on Mass Effect (see “Eric M. Lang Takes on ‘Mass Effect’”) and Discworld (see “Modiphius Gets Tabletop License for ‘Terry Pratchett’s Discworld’”). A pair of the company’s role-playing games were honored for the Origins Awards 2024 (see “Origins Awards Winners Announced”).
