DC Comics will bring a tokusatsu vibe to a new limited series, Immortal Legend Batman, announced by writer Kyle Higgins at his C2E2 panel on April 12. Higgins, whose resume includes Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and veteran superhero artist Dan Mora will team up with writer Mat Groom and artist Erica D’Urso for the six-issue series, which DC will publish as part of its Elseworlds line. The first issue will be released on August 27, 2025, with a main cover by Mora and a variant by Matt Taylor.
Immortal Legend Batman is set in the far future, when humanity has spread out across the galaxy, traveling from place to place in giant colony vessels and single-user mech suits, all powered by dark matter. This new technology has created violent monsters, the Shadows, who threaten to bring down the fragile space colonies unless they are defeated by the three warriors who can tap into that energy: Immortal Legend Batman, Immortal Legend Robin, and Immortal Legend Nightwing.
“In Immortal Legend Batman, Dan, Mat, Erica, and I are using elements of ‘superhero tokusatsu,’ so readers can expect to see cool and recognizable elements like mech/armor-style transformations, specifically named combat moves, a gradually expanding team, and more,” Higgins said in a statement accompanying the announcement.
Tokusatsu is an action genre that blends live action with special effects such as mech suits, as in Power Rangers. Higgins and Groom are also collaborating on a tokusatsu-influenced Spider-Man story, Spider-Verse Vs. Venomverse, which will launch in May 2025 (see "Classic Japanese Spider-Man").
