At the “Robert Kirkman Live” panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, Kirkman announced the return of the Invincible Universe series Capes as a monthly comic. The series, which Kirkman co-created with artist Mark Englert, was published in 2003 (with another one-shot in 2007) and the original issues are long out of print (although still available digitally). The relaunch will begin in November 2025 with remastered versions of the originals, with new art and dialogue from the original creators, and then move to new stories, by writer Benito Cereno and Englert, in May 2026. Like the flagship series Invincible, Capes is created by Skybound and published by Image Comics, and the first issue is due out on November 19, 2025, with a main cover by Invincible artist Ryan Ottley, an open to order variant by Englert, a 1:10 incentive by Invincible artist Cory Walker, a 1:25 variant by Jahnoy Lindsay, and a 1:50 black-and-white variant by Ottley.
Capes centers on Capes Inc., the employer of Bolt, Kid Thor, Knock Out, Captain Cosmic, Claire Voyant, Big Brain, and Commander Capitalism, the superheroes who defend New York. The three-issue series was collected, together with a 72-page backup story from Invincible, into a trade paperback in 2007.
Invincible has been a hot property in recent years, thanks in part to the Prime Video adaptation, and at the beginning of July Skybound announced two paperback collections of spinoffs Tech Jacket and The Astounding Wolf-Man (see “Skybound Adds Two ‘Invincible’ Compendia”).
