IDW Publishing announced a new creative team for their flagship Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, as well as a new spinoff and a Godzilla crossover, at Comic-Con International in San Diego.
Writer Gene Luen Yang, who picked up three Eisner Awards in this year’s ceremony (see “Eisner Awards 2025”), and artist Freddie E. Williams II, who has worked on a number of IDW’s other TMNT titles, will take over as the creative team of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with issue #13, after writer Jason Aaron and artist Juan Ferreyra wrap up their run with issue #12. IDW has also brought in Jake Thomas as Group Editor; Thomas spent over a decade at Marvel, editing Black Widow, Punisher, and other series, before leaving in 2021 to take a post as Senior Editor at Humanoids (see “Humanoids Hires Sean Brice”); he was promoted to Executive Editor in 2022. TMNT #13 will be released in December, with a main cover by Williams and a variant by Dustin Nguyen. In addition, IDW will offer a special blind bag variant featuring work by Daniel Warren Johnson, David Nakayama, Clayton Crain, and others.
To bridge the gap between September’s TMNT #12 and the new storyline, IDW will also release Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Annual 2025, by writer Kenny Porter and artists Michael Shelfer and Maria Keane, in October. The annual will be the starting point for a set of holiday-themed variant covers by Jared Cullum that will run across all TMNT titles.
The five-issue limited series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Battle Nexus, launching in November, will pull together characters from across the Turtleverse, including the Mirage Studios incarnation of Shredder, Metalhead from the animated series, Slash, and Ninjara, who will be making her first appearance in IDW comics. The creative team includes writers Tom Waltz, Paul Allor, Sophie Campbell, Caleb Goellner, and Erik Burnham and artists the Escorza brothers, Ben Bishop, Vitor Cafaggi, Omar Francia, and Hendry Prasetya, and the first issue will have covers by the Escorza brothers and Mateus Santolouco.
Also coming in November: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles X Godzilla #1, by writer Tim Seeley and artist Fero Pe, which brings the two franchises together in a crossover that reveals the true purpose of the Foot Clan, which is to fend off kaiju attacks, although Shredder and General Krang have different ideas and may cause a gigantic problem for the Turtles. Pe will be the cover artist for this comic.
The TMNT continue to be a top-selling franchise for IDW (see “Top Dollar Comics and Graphic Novels, Spring 2025”).
