Bandai Visual USA has announced that it will release the anime series Gunbuster with Image Entertainment (see 'Bandai Visual Teams with Image Entertainment') on February 20th.  As it has with its other U.S. releases (see 'Bandai Visual's Deluxe DVDs'), Gunbuster will be a high-end set specifically designed for otaku collectors.

The three disc set will include all six episodes of the series with newly translated English subtitles (done under the supervision of the original producers), bonus clips totaling 30 minutes, a 24-page color booklet, and an original deluxe art box imported from Japan.

Gunbuster is historically significant for a number of reasons.  It's the directorial debut of Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion, among others); it's the first commercially successful product from Gainax; and it was the first OVA made 'by and for the 'otaku generation.''  It was an original anime, not based on a pre-existing manga, toy, or videogame.
