Oni Press has announced that Stephen Colbert, the Emmy Award-winning host of Comedy Central's Colbert Report, will be making an appearance at the New York Comic Con in support of the new comic book miniseries, Stephen Colbert's Tek Jansen. The five-issue miniseries from Oni Press is based on Colbert's self-published, but undistributed, science fiction adventure Alpha Squad 7: Lady Nocturne: A Tek Jansen Adventure, which is also the inspiration for the series of animated Tek Jansen shorts on the hit Comedy Central show, The Colbert Report. The first issue in Oni's Stephen Colbert's Tek Jansen mini-series ships to comic shops in March. To help promote the launch of the series, Colbert will be signing at the New York Comic Con on Friday, February 23rd at 3:30 pm.
Stephen Colbert has changed the face of punditry forever with the stone-faced satire of The Colbert Report. Colbert's approach is based on his Borat-like ability to remain in character no matter what. He was the featured speaker at the 2006 White House Correspondents dinner, an appearance so controversial that in 2007 the organizers of the event opted for the bland, apolitical comedy of impressionist Rich Little as a sort of antidote to Colbert's provocative performance. Videos of Mr. Colbert's performance at the 2006 dinner were all over the Internet where they chalked up huge numbers of page views and downloads; and his routine provoked heated debates both in the traditional media and in the political blogs, though it certainly didn't hurt the ratings for his TV show.
Written by John Layman and Tom Peyer with Jim Massey and illustrated by Scott Chantler, Stephen Colbert's Tek Jansen #1 (of 5) is a full color, 32-page comic book that retails for $3.99. The first issue features a special 1-in-4 variant cover by Astonishing X-Men artist John Cassaday.
