Shea Fontana, who wrote the Super Hero Girls web series, original graphic novels, and digital-first comic series, is set to pen a five-issue arc for the Wonder Woman twice monthly comic from DC, launching this summer after the release of the film.
Mirka Andolfo (DC Comics: Bombshells) will draw the first two issues. Wonder Woman #26 arrives in stores on July 12, and Wonder Woman #27 follows on July 26. Jesus Merino covers issue #26. During her run, Fontana will debut a new villain, who seeks to capture Wonder Woman in order to prove that Amazonian DNA can change the world.
With Fontana driving the narrative, DC Super Hero Girls has been a big success across media and channels. DC Super Hero Girls: Hit and Myths debuted in the top 20 adult graphic novels chart from BookScan (see “November 2016 BookScan -- Top 20 Adult Graphic Novels”). The first OGN in the series, DC Super Hero Girls: Finals Crisis, earned the #4 spot in the top 10 graphic novels for June 2016 based on Diamond’s North American sale numbers (see “'Civil War II' and 'Rebirth' Launches Bring Direct Market Back”).
The web series, the first way stories for the property were launched, has also done well, with the first episode getting nearly a million views on YouTube alone. And the web series has supported toy sales, with the line getting the Toy Industry of America Toy of the Year Award in the action figure category in February (see "DC Super Hero Girls Go Intergalactic").
DC is celebrating Wonder Woman’s 75th Anniversary this year with special collections, comics, and toys (see “Celebrating 75 Years Of Wonder Woman”), and June 3 has been declared “Wonder Woman Day” (see “Celebrate 'Wonder Woman Day' with Amazon Accessories”). Fontana’s latest OGN in the hit series, DC Super Hero Girls Vol. 3: Summer Olympus, releases on July 11 (see “DC Super Hero Girls Print Line Expands“), and DC Super Hero Girls Wonder Woman Day Special Edition #1 includes a chapter from the new OGN (see “DC Celebrates 'Wonder Woman Day'”).
The hotly anticipated Wonder Woman feature film, starring Gal Gadot, opens on June 2 (see “New 'Wonder Woman' Trailer”).
