Rugrats creators Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo, and Paul Germain will executive produce the Nickelodeon series, which sees the return of original characters Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Susie, and Angelica, as well as new characters. Production is already underway, but casting and premiere information are pending.
The live-action Rugrats film will feature CGI characters. The film will be written by David Goodman and is scheduled to release on November 13, 2020. Paramount Players has a couple other live-action Nickelodeon films in the works, including Dora the Explorer (see “'Deathstroke,' 'Polar,' 'Godzilla: Monster Planet,' Live-Action 'Dora,' 'Hellboy'”) and Are You Afraid of the Dark.
The enduringly popular Rugrats series premiered on Nickelodeon in 1991 and amassed nine seasons over the next 15 years. It was the network’s top-rated show for most of its run. The animated adventures of the toddler main characters earned multiple Daytime Emmy Awards and Kids’ Choice Awards, and the franchise spawned a trilogy of animated feature films. BOOM!
