Former President Bill Clinton has contributed a back cover blurb to March, Book 1, the first volume in a graphic novel trilogy about the civil rights activities of Congressman John Lewis. The first volume in this historic graphic novel biography covers Lewis’ youth in rural Alabama and the beginning of the Nashville Student Movement, a powerful nonviolent sit-in lunch counter protest that lasted from February 13th to May 10th in 1960 and set the tone for the civil rights successes that were to come later in the decade.
Clinton’s endorsement, which is believed to be the first presidential blurb ever for a graphic novel, focuses on Lewis’ lifetime involvement in the struggle for equal rights: "Congressman John Lewis has been a resounding moral voice in the quest for equality for more than 50 years, and I’m so pleased that he is sharing his memories of the Civil Rights Movement with America’s young leaders. In March, he brings a whole new generation with him across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, from a past of clenched fists into a future of outstretched hands."
March Book 1 is due in August from Top Shelf Productions (see "Congressman John Lewis' Civil Rights Graphic Novel March").
